Why get renewables
Community renewable energy projects can help contribute to local economic and social development and encourage regeneration, especially in rural areas. Sourcing local supply chains for biomass, or providing land for energy crops or wind farms can provide local benefits such an employment, better woodland management and additional income streams for businesses and the community.
They can generate acceptance of renewable energy - engaging communities constructively in the development of small-scale renewable energy projects and demonstrating the benefits they can bring can help to generate public awareness and acceptance of renewable energy.
By generating acceptance of renewable energy community renewables can also help meet national targets for renewable energy output. The Scottish Government has set a target of generating 40% of its electricity supply from renewable sources by 2020 (follow this link for more information). To achieve this challenging target it will be essential to have the support of the general public.
Depending on which renewable energy technology(s) you install, you will benefit from reduced energy consumption and / or fuel bills and in some cases increased comfort (eg where space heating systems are installed).
